A STUDY OF THE TESTING ITEMS DETERMINING THE COURSE TYPE PROVIDED BY THE COURSEBOOK  PROJECT  1

INTRODUCTION

           It has been intended to carry on a study on the test items of a coursebook. The choosen coursebook is “Project 1” which was written by Tom Hutchinson and published by the “Oxford University Press”. The coursebook is assisted by a workbook. So , our study covers a coursebook and a workbook.

         We are willing to reveal the teaching and learning objectives of this coursebook by going through a deeper study into the coursebook testing items.

         Firstly the different testing items have been determined during the” Ingilizce Sýnav Hazýrlama ve Deðerlendirme” courses held in the “Istanbul University” English Language  Teaching Department  in the first semester of the 2000/2001.

         Secondly examplifying the different test items it has been given references to the other pages on which the same testing items have been used with the same aims. Determining the aims has also been realized.

         Lastly the results of the study have been stated in the conclusion part of this study.

 THE SURVEY

 The first test item which has been spotted is a listening and speaking skills integrated item.

 Its aim is to present the students with an input of the target language by a listening activity , thus they can turn this input into an output by a speaking activity.

 1) Testing comprehension through visual materials

The second item is writing skill and grammar integrated avtivity

Its aim is to enable students gain consciousness about grammar items in an intensive written context

The third item is a listening skill item

Its aim is to enable students make discrimination between the phonemes closer to each other by listening.

The seventh items is a vocabulary item

Its aim is recognizing the vocabulary and being able to make distinctions between different words.

 Its aim is completin the conversations with the appropriate vocabulary using the given data from the book.

The eleventh item is a completion item, however it doesn’t require any extra material for completing as in the last item which required a card or a picture to be used as a referance when completing.
